Coleman is a skilled and smooth guard who can really shoot the basketball. He has a virtually pure release that is ultra-fluid with good loft and rotation. He made 39% of his threes during the EYBL season and showed versatility in his shot-making profile. He has obvious gravity spotting up, really understands how to space the floor, and has a complementing one dribble pull-up. With his high school team though, we get to see more dynamic shot-making. He flies off different types of screening action, creates space with his step-backs, and shows deep range.

While Coleman played almost exclusively off the ball in the EYBL season, and was very efficient in that role, he gets to do more with the ball in the winter. He's a comfortable handler who can make plays with the ball and rarely gets sped up. He's not necessarily a flashy passer, but reliable, with an almost 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio in EYBL play, and untapped upside as he continues to develop his ability to make reads on the move and adds more layers to his passing skills.

Physically, Coleman has solid positional size at 6-foot-3, and is now starting to fill-out a previously undeveloped frame. He's starting to sprint the floor and move with more pace as his body evolves. He's also a good perimeter rebounder who isn't afraid to stick his nose into traffic. While he shows some tough lay-up making ability when he has space to navigate the lane, he can struggle through contact in the paint when the game slows down. As he continues to fill-out his frame, that could evolve, and take his playmaking potency to new levels.

The high level of confidence that no matter what happens this weekend, there will be more fun times ahead in the years to come.

There was a real sense of finality going into that ‘05 Final Four, it was pretty clear that we were fucked going forward based on the disastrous recruiting misses in the ‘04/‘05/‘06 recruiting classes leading into it. And with no transfer portal to fix any of that.

Dee breaking his foot kept it from instantly falling off a cliff as quickly as it otherwise would have, but those fears ended up being more right than any of us could have even imagined at the time. Even in my most pessimistic moments I wouldn’t have guessed 19 years until we’d even make a second weekend.

When something is happening, young people like to say it’s “lit.”

When the team does allow open threes, its lack of pressure and focus on individual matchups allows it to dictate who they want taking those looks. Illinois allowed 16 open jumpers in its wins over Houston and Iowa last weekend. Let's see who took those attempts:

HS in NJ. Played at Arizona Western for three years, two years at Alabama-Birmingham and now on to MEEECHIGAN, the academic school that he wants to challenge his brain.

He attended Pennsauken High School and tried out for the basketball team; he made the squad as a freshman, but was cut from the team mid-season due to poor academic performance.

Lendeborg later missed the next two seasons due to poor grades as well. As a senior, he entered a dual-enrollment program with Camden County College and his grades improved enough that he was able to join the Pennsauken varsity basketball team with 11 games left in the season.

Opening Statement: Brad excited to still be playing basketball. Still practicing in April means you had some success. Houston experience was great. Games were what he thought they'd be...gritty street fight. Had to show resilience and toughness and we did. Now UConn and Indianapolis. Excited for program, university, CU community. Tons of people to thank. Fans, Krush students...excited to create lasting memories for them. Glad for the team...ceiling was high and nice to be rounding into our best basketball in Houston. Now we have our hands full with UConn...they handled us on Black Friday as MSG earlier this season, but we're a different team (and so are they.)

On Mirk and his approach to the game (and national media just noticing this): Where has the media been all year?
Mirk is talented, fun to watch his growth. Tons of personality and a huge competitive spirit. High IQ. Excited he's on our team. He's done everything for us. He loves basketball and working...first one in the gym Monday morning. 19 year old kid that loves the moment and the game.

On team handling increased expectations/media obligations: They're enjoying it. Got together Sunday to celebrate, and now on to the next. Lots of people helping manage the week. Reached out to other coaches to get ideas.

On opportunity to get more time with this team: Brad's selfish...he loves practice and loves this team...they've been a joy...they make brad happy, smile, laugh. Very few bad days of practice. Not many teams get to practice into April.

On if Brad knew early if this team could do this: No, but knew they were capable. Liked what the team could be. Had some hiccups with injury and sickness, but got there through those speed bumps. Likes where we're at now. Loved the personalities early, but glad to see them come together over the course of the season. Team of character, not characters. Playing for Illinois, not the name on the back. They love each other, and they get joy when others get successful. Euro players get that it's about the team. We try to recruit guys that are selfless and competitive. We hit a home run with this group.

On the past couple days for Brad: Best piece of this for Brad is he's had a lot of stops along the way...tons of friends reaching out, which helps you remember the moments with those people along the way. Gratifying to talk with them and have them come to Indy. The rest is just another day...watch film. Derrick controlling media requests, so that's expected and all good. Brad enjoying it.

On health of the team: Good.

On how UConn is different: Reed is a man possessed. Mullins was coming off an ankle injury...had the big shot. We're a lot different. Keaton minimal role the first time...made the change after that UConn game. Some things to take from the first game, but not a lot.

On Kariban: Winner...dives for lose balls, never comes off the floor. Guards, fights, competes. All the intangibles he does to win games. Brad enjoys watching him play.

On Ayo's recent game and players reaching out. (couldn't hear the question well): Lots of good players have come through here. Awesome hearing from Daren, Marcus, Dee, Kendall. Guys that have had success are just as excited for current guys as they were when they were here. That's the benefit of a program that is so excellent with a great history.

On maintaining best basketball going into the Final Four: Yeah, if we don't, we'll only get one more game. We've been focused, healthy, comfortable in different roles than we were early. Took a while to get Dre and Bos back. We have 8 starters...that's helped us with great balance and avoiding lapses (especially defensively). Jake and Ben have been awesome.

On keeping kids grounded going into this: Lots of obligations, but trying to stay loose. Lots of people. Brad wants to have fun, have the group have fun, go into it and "let it rip".

On what coaches he's talked to for final four advice: Painter, Altman, Izzo, Self. They said "enjoy it, it's crazy". Lots of positive help from those guys. Great resource and experience with those guys. Take a bit, and see if it works for our team or not.

Even with an offense as elite as our ‘05 team, I really find the basketball of that era hard to watch. It isn’t as much of a slog as rewatching games from the 90’s Bulls era, but the 35 second shot clock and the general style is still a tough watch for me.

I would love to see an alternate universe where that team plays with a 2026 style offensive system, they could have been even more dominant if that style of offense was around at the time.

...the current brand of college basketball is a lot better. All of the NBA guys come to college for a year. Guys who may go take a shot at the league stick around for a million or 2 of NIL money.

College ball may be the very best it's ever been... and yes, I include the halcyon 80s... basketball is just more athletic now overall than it was then.

Now CBS's latest mock draft has 29/30 of the first round as college guys, and Illinois is kicking ass.

1. That had to have to been the most stressful 12 point win in history. When I saw the score I figured it was probably similar to the Houston game, needless to say it was anything but.

2. Like I said in one of the other threads I’m glad there was just a day between games. It’s unimaginable how devastating it would have been to lose that game. I’m glad I didn’t have more time to think about it.
