They are in their 80’s and defected when they were young. He was a doctor in NYC before they retired, so they are well off.

They use to live in the city and now split their time between a home on Shelter Island and Raleigh.

Before dinner the gentleman went into his Faux News speech where he asserted that he’s scared to think what will happen in NYC now with the new mayor. All of the Dems running showed up. It was hosted by a highly non partisan civic leadership organization (Leadership Atlanta).

It was pretty entertaining TBF. The Republican candidate who did show seems to be centrist and more of a technocrat. I'm not buying what he's selling because he things he can wring efficiencies out of government and eliminate the income tax. I can't see that as being a serious fiscal plan for the state. But I think I'm going to flip him a few bucks for actually showing up and doing the work. He did, by the way, make some good points, so he gets credit for that too.

It was hard to discern which of the Dems I liked the most. They all had positives and negatives. I think maybe Keisha Lance Bottoms (fmr Atlanta mayor) lost some credibility for me for an off handed comment about wanting to legalize casinos.

I say thing because I’ve I’ve never met an Indian in the US that doesn’t speak English but there are a drastic amount of Chinese in my neighborhood with no English language skills whatsoever.

They have their own grocery stores. Their own restaurants. Own shops. Even own churches. Rare is crossover between the white community and Chinese community in any meaningful way but everyone happens to just coexist and get along.

…I was just reviewing applicants for an early career (4+ years experience) data analyst position. Selected 11 candidates for the first round of interviews. Of those, there is 1 that is probably white, and 1 that might be. And a bunch of the others aren’t just (presumably) from immigrant families, many are first generation immigrants who went to school in another country and then moved here.

I can’t imagine that anyone hiring in any technical field could think that the US doesn’t both badly need and benefit tremendously from immigrants.
