OpenAI recently saw revenue and new users growth that were below its own targets, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The report added that CFO Sarah Friar told leadership she was concerned OpenAI may not be able to pay computing contracts in the future if its top line doesn’t expand fast enough.

far more to deliver than they can charge. They all brag about how much profit they're making on inference, as if the training costs won't continue to pile up in what is essentially an 8-way arms race that will never end training models that to the end user mostly work the same. Their spending on infrastructure never ends either. It's not like you build a data center and it lasts 25 years. The GPUs that run all this stuff last about 3 years, and they're super expensive.

The AI agent was set to complete a routine task in the PocketOS staging environment. However, it came up against a barrier “and decided — entirely on its own initiative — to 'fix' the problem by deleting a Railway volume,” writes Crane, as he starts to describe the difficult-to-believe series of unfortunate events.

Never fucking guess

Certainly a problem when the AI does this, but the cloud provider hosting the database and backups has an architecture that seems designed to produce this kind of disaster.

When Tim Cook announced his departure the other day, some comments were about Apple's being behind in AI (loosely defined). I wondered whether maybe that was a good thing, as the revenue opportunity through iPhones seems modest relative to potential expense.

How many people are like me in my retirement where advanced AI that I'd have to pay for directly does not necessarily bring a lot to the table (yet)?

Yesterday I listened to the Dwarkesh podcast from last year with Jeff Dean of Google fame. He talked about the incredible technology and grand ideas for its potential. Brilliant guy with an exceptional track record. He has hopes for advanced tech such as specialized processors to drive down the cost of "compute." But the expenses will still be massive.
