Sources: The NCAA has initiated the final steps to expand the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments to 76 teams. The expansion is on track to be formalized in the upcoming weeks, with mid-May as the target. The 76-team tournaments begin next year.

Not sure if that will actually change our number all that much--replacing Keaton seems to be the biggest drag on our analytics. But there are probably some teams ranked a lot higher now than they will be when rosters are finalized.

I just don’t know who is going to give him a bigger role that wouldn’t also require walking away from a sizable chunk of money. I’m pretty confident whatever we’d offer to him as a 9th/10th man is a lot more than he’d get from a midmajor.

But I also get that a guy who hasn’t played in 2+ years may want to, you know, actually get to play basketball.

Not sure how the ACC is contracted but what killed the Big 12 originally was the third tier broadcast rights where schools could sell their own rights for third tier games which is what Texas did to create the Longhorn network

Big Ten and SEC pool all tv rights and I’m guessing the ACC does now too but Duke worked out a deal

The ACC Grant of Rights is tied up with the conference's ESPN deal.

So if ESPN agreed to exclude these games from the ESPN deal (in exchange for games the next two years) then Duke (or anyone that cut a deal with ESPN) would be free to do something like this, I guess.

There's been some reference to the Thanksgiving game in Chicago Duke played against Arkansas on CBS in some of these articles.

Sounds like it's going to be a bit of an NIL windfall though for Duke.

Gather up teams that finished first and second in various leagues with strong records and let them fight it out in possibly balanced matchups, with the winners surviving for the main bracket.

Maybe guarantee some slots to regular season winners in certain conferences. Like the Miami (Ohio) situation this year. Or Belmont, which won its league by three games. OK, you're in, no debate.

But that's the opposite of the plan to add more major conference also-rans. And adding more no-names wouldn't bring in much money.

If they ever went to 96, they'd have to add more lower-tier teams.
