The only thing they can point to going right is the market, which has long been divorced from reality. Personally, if I was approaching the upper end of middle age I'd be more interested in better healthcare, pumping funds into cancer research, a stable government, good education systems in place for my kids/grandkids, not getting entangled in lengthy wars, investment into arts and parks for my free time in retirement, but I guess the illusion that only Trump can press the make stock go up button and the opportunity to discriminate against trans folks is worth all the chaos they've decidedly opted into.

I was too young back then to know that 99% of the jokes in comic strips are just middle-aged dudes broadcasting how uncomfortable the modern world makes them, so I repeated the joke during a discussion session in class. 3. Smaller class sizes.

4. More varied class options. Give kids an opportunity to find out what interests them and keep them more engaged.

5. Grind up the dumb kids into a protein slurry to feed the smarter ones.

To the overall point though, money is not the only thing that has to be done. Some of the worst schools pay decently, it's just that many teachers don't want to go and teach there because they're not safe.

So throwing money at teacher salaries isn't the only solution...it's not a cure all. Raising teacher salaries will, however, possibly stop the trend that we're seeing now where a lot of college kids are making the active choice to avoid going into education as a career because they don't see an economic future in it.

Smaller class sizes for sure.

Universal childcare/daycare. The difference between the kids who show up for kindergarten having been in a school-adjacent, socialized setting vs. those who did not is night and day. Teachers will always have to differentiate between levels in their classroom, there’s no getting around that, but setting kids up for success in kindergarten would be extremely helpful.

Also agree on the starting salaries. There are real differences between good teachers and bad teachers and we need to recruit as many good ones as possible. It makes a difference.

At the time, they tested very similarly. Sweden privatized and testing plummeted. Finland doubled down on increasing teacher salaries, requiring master's degrees, shortening school days, limiting homework, etc. They took off.

Wish I could find the article comparing the two approaches.

1. Make HS entry competitive. You have to apply and be accepted. Have there be a tech HS in an area...tech kids apply and go there. College prep HS...those kids apply and go there. If you are not a serious student, you go to the dipshit high school or go right into a GED prep program. Make HS's like colleges...make them competitive and specialized.

2. At least in Illinois, make it so you can suspend and kick kids out again. It's so impossible anymore to do that. If a kid doesn't want to be there, and is disruptive to the educational environment, launch them.

3. Make schools more protected from lawsuits. Most of the permissiveness Harb mentioned below is from schools, teachers, and admins being afraid of legal retribution. Anytime you do anything a parent doesn't like, they threaten legal action. And the processes for dealing with those issues (the millions of meetings, the stress, etc.) is enough to make a lot of people just choose the path of least resistance so they have time to do the other aspects of their jobs.

4. Pay teachers more. Gotta make the profession desirable.

5. This won't be popular, but have public schools focus less (or not at all) on sports. The amount of time and resources that goes into sports teams is a lot. America is sports crazy, and American parents over-book their kids starting at a young age with the amount of sports they're involved in. Travel sports parents know what I'm talking about. All of that time takes away from time the kid could be getting more academic work done.

None of these are easy. American schools expect the kids to learn everything, be everything...other countries offer specialization towards the kid's interests and don't make them do everything. American schools expect the teachers to be teachers, counselors, special ed. experts, coaches, mentors, substitute parents. It's too much to do everything well and still have a family of your own, and get paid dick for it.

The younger generation becomes the “experienced” teaching staff.

This era of children are coddled and babied and have been dumbed down by bad teaching policies. Just look at the bullshit that common core math is. Sold to districts as a “new and modern” way to teach math. To go along with no math facts, no spelling tests and best of all, no grades.

You should hear the classroom stories from MrsHarb. Just crazy what she has to put up with and no real support from admin.

She just texted me and one of her kids is already screaming and disrupting class today. It happens with this one about three or more times a week and she has to be removed from the room. And then gets to come back when she calms down with no consequences for her actions.

That’s the problem with the inclusion mentality. It is affecting the smart kids because teachers can’t teach to them because teachers are to busy putting out classroom fires and dealing with disruptions and interruptions.
