His ERA is now 6.79 since the start of June. They don't have nearly enough starting pitching but thankfully the division is bad and .500 might grab a WC spot.

not to mention we had great seats for roughly $75 a piece. it was clean, cool, had decent food, not too crowded, and walkable from downtown, which was pretty nice as well.

They appear to be intentionally avoiding rentals. Every player they've acquired has at least some team control left, although it's TBD what that will be worth next year.

In today’s game pitchers generally like to use new baseballs as opposed to ones with scuff marks.

They are very specific in their practice of pitch shapes. Scuff marks add variables they are not used too and do not want.

Which is interesting because he was the first one I recall saying that the Sox were seriously considering Emerson over Roch.

He thinks Sox go with the safer/closer to bigs pick (which is kind of where I'm at even though I usually like risk/upside)

Also says he hasn't heard of any bonuses being discussed yet so seems clear that Roch hasn't made any astronomical demands.

And I feel like this is like a more detailed reading of my posts here complete with nitpicking assertions and Dansby Swanson comp. I haven't read or listened to BP all year but I guess glad(?) to see I'm thinking like them.

It’s been a prolific few years for Cholowsky, a high-profile Arizona prep shortstop who made it to UCLA and has blossomed into a premier college talent. Entering the season as the 1.1 favorite after a dominant sophomore campaign, he’s done little to dissuade that notion. While the top-line numbers aren’t as gaudy as they were last year, he’s still posted a prolific stat line with strong underlying contact, plate discipline, and exit velocities. In addition to the offensive output, his best trait is his defense, as he projects as a plus or better defensive shortstop with some of the smoothest actions in the class. There are some slight yellow flags offensively if you want to nitpick (and he’s been high profile enough for so long that prospect fatigue and nitpicking has fully set in): He can fish at sliders below the zone, and his unconventional swing—in which he coils his body before methodically uncoiling seemingly limb by limb—could render outcomes where he struggles to catch up to high velocity or get the barrel out in front of the plate enough to pull balls in the air at a high rate. However, even in these bad offensive outcomes, his defensive profile should buoy the floor enough where he is a notable big leaguer, and the good outcomes likely resemble something like Dansby Swanson, a former 1.1 himself who turned into a two-time All-Star and will make over $200 million in his career. It’s as complete of a profile you’ll find in the draft with a strong floor and ceiling, and that puts him at the top of the list.

but I do always laugh at the idea of draft boards and best player available. Commentators act like those things are done with the purest of intentions, teams just manipulate them based on who they actually want and/or can actually get.

Really bad is a bit of a stretch. It runs the gamut and the bottom is pretty weak

But there's some really good top tier and mid tier teams. It's a solid league below the ACC, Big 12, and SEC.

Roch wasn't as great as he was a sophomore but he still was pretty elite and a great player. Like I said before he very much reminds me of what happened with Rodon when everyone decided to jump on the shiny new thing because he just put up a similar maybe slightly worse year than the year before and was nitpicked to death.

At least in this case the Lackey and Emerson have better odds than Kolek and Aiken.

is god awful in save situations and unhittable in non-save ones. Whereas Taylor was filthy in save situations and pedestrian in non-save

I'm sure they're both small sample size, but interesting

Regardless, they both need to throw strikes. Every batter was 2-0, 3-1 and they got crushed (or walked batters)

Dunno: maybe if you had a reliable closer and taken everyone else in the bullpen and backed them up one inning??

Who knows. On the day he signed, if you would have said that the Sox would be flirting with first in the division on June 23 you would have been considered a witch/crazy person.

The Sonny Gray/Chapman potential deal is interesting. Not sure what you'd have to give up for that

Here we are with a winning record against some of the toughest teams/biggest payrolls in MLB over the last ten days or so: sure can't argue with that.

Saw one of those cherry-picked stats (and I usually don't like these things, but...) since the day he came to the majors-about one calendar year ago-he's got the third highest number of HR's IIRC. I guess the top of that list is the former Cub/now Phillie player... and not too far down is Montgomery. Pretty good for a guy who was in extended Spring Training not that long ago.

And now, please don't fall apart in the next few games against teams more your size. Please.

white sox are definitely improved and have a good 'it' factor happening right now. eventually i think the lack of starting pitching will catch up to them. i do think they'll mash all year.

cubs are scuffling badly right now but they have too much talent to be this bad all year. i think they'll end up better than the sox, but probably underperform as it relates to preseason expectations.
