It will go in through the thickness of the joist, which is 1 ⅝". The bolt is ¼" in diameter. What size hole should I drill? ¼" or slightly smaller?

Is it going thru and you’re putting nut/washer on the other side?..

if so, you can do something slightly larger like 5/16. Since the bolt isn’t needing to grip into joist to provide holding power.

^. Also you want to slightly oversize for a bearing connection to avoid cross-grain tension

Yes. It’s a two inch long eye bolt. With a nut.*

Yep, than just use a 5/16th bit. If you only have a 1/4, it should be fine…

you must just need to gently hit with a hammer to get it thru or just wiggle the bit when you’re drilling and it will make the hole slightly larger
