Career high in catches is 41, which was in his rookie year.

These deals all depend on the specifics more than the total number, but this sure feels like a lot. Great player in theory but has never been able to fully put it together.

trying not to look at this through bear fan goggles, because my gut says gb is just always going to be good. but i do see some things (jacobs situation, o-line attrition, parsons out until mid-october, new dc) that make me wonder if they are in for a bit of a drop this year.

and those are both high-variability categories. Throw in the fact that season-ending injury is a higher probability for NFL players, and that explains most of what we see as the curse.

For instance, last year's cover was Saquon, and while he had a passable 2025, it obviously didn't come close to his 2024. Does that count as cursed?

QBs tend to have better luck. The last "cursed" cover QB was Vince Young in '08, and that was just a player who never progressed into being a good quarterback.

They wasted a first round pick on a marginal in college QB that won’t play for the next 2 years.

They should have drafted an impact player to fortify the rest of the Stafford era. Their roster is great so they won’t feel the effects of this move, but it was Browns/Bengals/Raiders-level draft incompetence.

They picked Simpson because they’re still planning to be good and wouldn’t have been picking that high again in the next year or two unless things go really wrong, so it made sense to use the luxury of a pick they got in a trade to take a QB of the future. And because the GM is friends with the dad and made a promise.

But it’s very unlikely that they could have known for sure that this Myles Garrett deal would get done at the time of the draft, so I think the cause and effect is being flipped here. I doubt they drafted Simpson because they knew they were about to trade away next year’s 1st, but they might have decided they were more comfortable trading that pick after drafting Simpson.

Given the timing of it, my guess is the trade was in the works for quite some time...

Not necessarily tying these concepts together, but the fact it was announced on June 1 leads me to believe they were just keeping it under wraps until the time to announce... although if I was the Browns, I wouldn't want to do that... I'd want to entice better offers... but they're the Browns for a reason.

Unless Stafford got hurt and the entire season went off the rails. So it feels like a stretch to me that the Simpson pick was made with this trade in mind. You’re trading away your future to make this deal, so it seems more logical that you’d want to use that mid 1st round pick for a player that can help you win in this 1-2 year window they’ve now set.

but then I looked up his stats and realized that Verse isn’t nearly as productive as I thought he was. Probably still valued at around a mid 1st round pick though, which puts this pretty well in line with the Mack and Parsons trade.

How do the Rams always have money for max contract guys? Is the lesson that if you have an elite QB, 1 elite WR, 1 elite DL, and 1 elite CB, you can kind of play around the margins everywhere else? The difference between paying top dollar contracts for Aaron Donald and Cooper Kupp (in his prime) versus Montez Sweat and DJ Moore is massive and covers up a lot of other warts.
