There’s a new top fast food chain: Jersey Mike’s

The king of fast food has been dethroned after more than a decade on top.

That's according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index, a report released this week based on thousands of customer surveys reflecting on recent experiences with major restaurant chains.

Beloved chicken chain Chick-fil-A has sat atop the index for 11 years, but 16,464 respondents knocked it from the top spot in favor of the sandwich shop Jersey Mike's, which was routinely praised for freshness, food variety and value.

Other top quick-service restaurants include Jimmy John's and Panda Express (Tied-3rd), KFC, Papa John's and Domino's (Tied-4th), Raising Cane's, Starbuck's and Subway (Tied-5th) and Burger King, Dunkin' and Little Caesars (Tied-6th).

...likely dwarf other categories in American food dollars is what I'm talking about.

As an aside...I think the chicken places do the best...because thus far it seems hard to fuck up fried chicken.

Burger places can be decent to good but probably has the widest gulf in the category.

Chain pizza is almost as a rule completely inedible and the chain "ethnic" just isn't really comparable to their actual cultural equivalent. At all.

I'm not sure if they're popular and thus ubiquitous crowding out all else or if they crowded out all else and became popular. Either way, it's a sad state of affairs.

These are the options they have available and they serve a purpose in that regard. Obviously there’s another discussion to be had about why local businesses can’t survive in small towns anymore, but I don’t begrudge people for liking these kinds of places.

Its really only a last ~20 years development for these places to be mock worthy, I grew up in a good sized Chicago suburb in the 80’s/90’s and even then a night out at Pizza Hut or Olive Garden was a delicacy. There were a few other restaurants in town but nothing like it is now where there’s one on every corner.

...where I grew up.

The have vanishingly small local options...but I guess nearly every form of retail consumption has gone that way.

They had a killer local spot "Burgers and Beer". It opened after I had left but it was like my go-to when I came back home. Great burgers. A solid collection of beers. It closed this year. Local German restaurant, closed. Local coffee shop / restaurant down to one. Pizza, Casey's seems like the go-to. The olds meet up at McDonalds for coffee instead of the local place.

Why is that and why has that happened? General downward socio-economic glidepath of the rural midwest forcing cheaper food choices?

Anyway, I'm tangenting way hard away from the original point.

the olds meet up at McDonalds in your town because the total experience is consistent (clean, quality is the same, wait times are consistent, etc etc.)

in my home town the same guy i went to HS with keeps buying everything small (couple of bars, a sit down restaurant, a diner) and makes them all work because he worked for the sit down restaurant for 15 years and figured out how it works before buying it. he's able to turn all these things cash positive. he's an outlier. most small business owners are clueless about what they are actually selling.

not having the supply chain scale that a McDonalds or a Burger King increases costs, which increases price in order for the place to survive. Customers see those prices and either can't afford it, don't want to sit down/wait longer for their food, or figure McD's/BK is good enough for less, so they go there.

to work around the clock 7 days a week for minimal to no profit - which seems to be what it often takes to run an independently owned restaurant. The idea that these restaurants were successful in the past could be a false assumption, I’m guessing many (or most?) were perpetually teetering on the edge.

I remember being on vacation in Sedona and talking to a couple in their 70’s who said they had just sold their restaurant and were on the first vacation they’d taken in decades since the husband would never take a day off. How many people in this current generation are willing to live that life?

Unfortunately, their fries are worse than Wendys, which suck. And the cheese sticks, onion rings, and chicken fries aren't much good either.

5 Guys to BK is like Chipotle to Taco Bell, and neither Culvers nor In & Out are national chains, so they don't have to make the compromises that come with scaling up to that many stores.

The Baconator is better than any of BK's bacon burgers, but a Whopper with everything is better than a Dave's single with everything. Also, the BK double chee is significantly better than a Double Stack, which is like 75% bread at this point.

I think 5 Guys and In and Out are very overrated. 5 Guys sales are getting pummeled because it is too expensive for what it is. they've announced they are closing stores.

In and Out experience is good, the food is fine, but if they scale up I think they'll run into a lot of problems.

You've gotta hand it to McDonald's. They are very innovative for a company their size in food, marketing, and experience. The consistency of food and experience plus speed at scale is unmatched.

I think it was a This American Life episode. It was really fascinating to hear about how big chains like that explore new food options.

One crazy thing about McDonald’s in particular is that they are so huge, simple logistics were a critical element in their recipes. They are so big that just adding an ingredient to a food item can move the market and shift prices significantly, or even overtax world supply of something.

clean stores, friendly staff, small menu, "secret" items. the food is just normal fast food but the brand is super strong.

Chik Fil A is the same way. There are better chicken sandwiches, there aren't a lot of better experiences. Chick Fil A being able to scale that experience the last decade to become a national chain is a tough task to pull off, but they did.

Buccees, tho not fast food, is very good at executing the experience.

It's also the only place I can go with all 4 of us and eat for like 35 bucks. It's the cheapest place to eat outside of my house by a fucking landslide.

BK has great burgers and everything else (food, service, experience) is terrible.

that said I would absolutely go eat at an OG pizza hut

They recently revamped their traditional hand tossed and have tavern style now as well.

I really like the tavern style and my wife really likes the new hand tossed, so could be worth giving another shot if you haven’t had it in a while.

Definitely depends on the quality of your local store though. I always get a couple sides of marinara because there were times in the past where I wondered if they just didn’t remember the step of putting sauce on the pizza.

but I have such an incredible nostalgia trip over going to the Eureka Pizza Hut once a month to cash in my book it coupons for a personal pan pizza, it was about the only time we really ever ate out growing up.

that was my go-to. although now I get a BLT (with no T, so just a BL with cheese, so a BLC) and they usually put a bunch of bacon it without needing to ask for extra. so that's nice.
