Burakovsky sucked for the second half of the year - like really sucked - but he’s still probably one of their best 12 forwards. And they easily could have absorbed some of that 5.5M and gotten a better pick.

With free agency in the league being completely dead at least for a few more years, the prices to trade for a good player must just be astronomical now. This isn’t the same environment as it used to be where there were a bunch of cap-strapped teams and good options in free agency.

The market is obviously whatever is actually being offered. But just because some teams or overvaluing talent doesn’t mean that other teams can’t find the inefficiencies of which their seem to be many.

Hockey is nowhere near as efficient as say baseball.

Byram is a fine player he will most likely never be worth the value the Blackhawks are putting into him. However the Hawks do have many resources and some point they have to use it.

The original sin is passing on Demidov imo. They still need a forward to play with Bedard. The lines Powers put out today are not reassuring especially with the talk from Davidson that Kantserov is as a good as any forward they could add.

I don't think it was THAT bad of a deal from the Hawks perspective. They have plenty of young players in the pipeline and is Louis Crevier THAT big a loss?

They also badly need a veteran D man. That said, Bedard badly needs a wingman.....

Blackhawks really wanted Stenberg and have really wanted Byram, wondering if it was just going to be too much for Davidson to stomach to see San Jose get both after they keep being one step ahead of the Blackhawks in these parallel rebuilds.

which means at least for now you probably can’t even pair him with Levshonov or Rinzel. And the part that bugs me is that a free agent in a year so it’s not like he’s on a good contract that was signed before the cap went out. He’ll have all the leverage in negotiations since the Hawks obviously have to extend him, so you’ll be giving him a huge overpay on the contract too.

Maybe none become elite players but they have a lot of forwards they are counting on to be good - Frondell, Kantserov, Nazar, Lardis, Moore + a veteran in Bertuzzi that has still been very useful. The problem is they are insisting on all these guys being centers, I’d rather that Frondell is paired up with Bedard. But if none of these guys turn into quality players to put alongside Bedard, then the whole thing is fucked anyway.

then I say fuck it - put in a huge offer sheet for Jason Robertson and make the Stars find the money to match it. Would cost you your next 4 first round picks if Dallas doesn’t match, but if you add Robertson and Byram + the young core develops as you hope, those hopefully won’t be top 5 picks anymore and Robertson would be worth it.

and a yet to be named player. And the return right now is Byram and a 4th line winger. It feels like for this to make sense there has to be something else going to Chicago.

I’m ok with being bold and have been asking for it, but on paper this is batshit crazy. I don’t care about Blackhawks Twitter but national people seem to be universally floored at how much the Blackhawks are giving up for a guy who hasn’t even proven himself to be a #1 D yet.

If he’s awesome then it’s fine, but if not this could be a career-altering move by Davidson. He desperately needs both Byram and Levshunouv to be studs.

The Norris Trophy winner Zach Werenski may be about to ask for a trade. That’s a guy you could use an asset like Chase Reid and other picks to get. Using that AND MORE to get a guy who hasn’t proven to be a top pair defenseman yet would likely break a trade value simulator if there was one of those for the NHL.

But on the other hand I appreciate that he made a big swing. Everyone was ready to crucify him if he kept going the slow and steady route. So I’m all for it if it works, Byram just needs to be REALLY good for it not to be a bad trade.
