For a regular workweek I have a bit extra time, but if I miss a day or am on vacation there’s a big backlog, then I prioritize and skip a bunch.

That said illini sports podcasts represent the vast majority of my consumption. If I didn't listen to those, I don't think I'd spend nearly as much time listening to podcasts

Most video podcasts are just video coverage of two to three people with headphones talking to one another. The video component couldn't be more useless. Secondary part, I mostly don't watch Youtube videos either, with the exception of things like Hot Ones, which is a genuinely good show.

There are a lot of YT videos that could be audio-only, but 90% of those are video versions of podcasts where one or two hosts just recite a report they wrote. Maybe there's a picture edited in once in a while, but for the most part they just "pivoted to video" because the algorithm told them to, and it was relatively inexpensive to do.

The better YT creators make use of the video portion of the presentation.

But without the video, they'd be completely worthless to "listen" to.

I don't watch much on YouTube, but when I do it's a video on how to fix something on a car, repair an appliance, do something to a house, or an exercise video - all where the video component is as or more important than the audio.

If I'm at work, then the cognitive resources I can devote to non-work stimulus are enough for a comedy pod, but not nearly enough for long-form informational content. If I'm not at work, then I'm asleep within 30 minutes of turning on an audiobook or long-form pod. I haven't listened to a Hardcore History since the one about Genghis Khan.

Mine anymore are generally college football related or something lighter.

Used to listen to stuff like Marketplace, Planet Money, This American Life, etc. that was more educational, but sort of moved away from those.

Do sometimes listen to Derek Thompson's Plain English podcast has he often has varying topics or Pablo Torre. Still, not super deep.

There are a handful of accounts I follow on sites like Bluesky, etc., where they will post snippets of a podcast they did and I will listen (or watch) the minute or two of the snippet in the post.

I once subscribed to a podcast of someone I followed elsewhere and I lasted about five minutes of one episode before realizing it just wasn't my thing and unsubscribing.

To be at zero feels like a conscious choice to actively avoid them*

I've clicked a few things people posted here, but even then it was a function of just clicking around and trying to find the topic that interested me and then getting frustrated and quitting.

The whole talk/interview as entertainment genre is something I have 0 interest in. Listening to any group discussing a topic for longer than 30 seconds sounds awful.
