i'm a fan of Colin Woodward's American Nations map, which is based more on census data.

A pretty simple explanation of the country and how it's history and expansion explains modern culture and politics. Things start to make a lot more sense when you ignore states and instead view the country this way.

check out Albion's Seed by David Hacket Fischer, which is the start point of Woodward's work.

It's pretty readable given it's length and academic origins.

You'd have to come to an agreeable regional map but I've long felt that you should try and group by commonality. As suspected, I'm a tiny pocket of Mid-Atlantic forced in with Chesapeake

I am not sure the Ohio River Valley is an actual region

I grew up in C-U in the center of the Illinois portion of that, on this map, and it’s absolutely not accurate for thst area in my experience.

I’d split that region between Appalachia, lower Midwest, and Great Lakes.

At minimum put it at the I-80/I-39 junction but definitely should put the Quad Cities with the Upper Midwest. I'll let the Iowans weigh in if Cedar Rapids and Iowa City should join too.

She's always given me the vibe that there is, in fact, a cultural difference between the Iowa nearer to Mo. vs the Iowa north of Des Moines.
