When I was traveling for business I was exposed to so many different foods. It was great because I was a little picky before that.
I remember in Japan they took me out for dinner one evening, traditional Japanese sitting on the floor etc. Food was brought out and the Japanese businessman encouraged me to try something, they sat and watched with curiosity as I ate the unknown, it was interesting, not my favorite, but not gag worthy, they all laughed and said, we don't even eat that
Then the alcohol started to flow. Japanese can drink a lot, enormous amounts of hard liquor.
