I think the WPB will split or break up at some point .It is an alliance based on mutual convenience and both sides entertaining illusions about the other . Galloway thinks that the Brarites will rush around leafleting and canvassing and get him back on the parliamentary gravy train . The Brarites for their part think having a celebrity , a big name on board , will do the trick for them and they will become a mass party . When Galloway does not get back into parliament or the Scottish parliament he will probably turn on the Brarites . Similarly the Brarites might turn on Galloway once they find the WPB is not growing as fast as they or as big as they want it . Sooner or later there will be a bust up.
The Brarites once a gung ho but somewhat sectarian group seem to have gradually defaulted to the toxic strategy entertained by some on the British left ; ignoring or marginalising rank and file supporters and instead trying to pull in big names and relying on them to attract people to the party . Some former CPGBML members I spoke to referred to an atmosphere of elitism within the party .
The WPB like the SLP before it has an identity problem ; is meant to be a better version of old Labour or a communist party ? . I once asked someone who was in the SLP at the time , what the SLP was meant to be , he replied ' a Marxist workers party ' , whatever that really is when it is at home .
People have said to me that they would join the WPB if the Brarites were not involved with . The British left needs a party in tune with the working class and free from the stuffiness of many organisations . However instead of being led by real workers the WPB is led by the likes of Joti Brar and George Galloway and unlikely to attract the angry and dissatified working class .
