I agree that a more proportional electoral system benefits smaller parties (sadly left parties in most countries are smaller parties). However, why could not a group of left-wing Labour MPs withhold support from a centrist Labour government to push it to the left? That seems (to me) what hard right Tory MPs have done, especially on issues of the EU, since the 1990s.
