That period spans two "different" parties. The Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands that was banned in 1956 based on its opposition to the BRD state's Grundgesetz and the Deutsche Kommunistische Partei which still limps onwards and considers itself the successor to the KPD fate since its formation in the late 1960s.
