In the first election of the BRD the old KPD did fairly well (perhaps unsurprising given the extreme poverty at the time) despite losing some of its former strong-holds like Thüringen to the Russian zone.

Its support collapsed as the repressive nature of Russian occupation became more clear and the economy improved.
