The Political Committee statement on the Russian intervention was promised for the evening of the 24th but came out late on the 25th.
One can assume by its length, tortuous wording and internal contradictions there was significant difficulty in agreeing it as a whole, although it is not yet possible to know what the actual political differences are.
The Morning Star editorial on the 23rd February i.e. before the military incursion across Ukraine, called on Russia to withdraw from the newly recognised separatist areas of Lugansk and Donetsk!! i.e. to leave Russian speaking Ukrainians and ethnic Russian populations to continue to be butchered by Nazi paramilitaries. Treason.
The Star editorial of the 25th and subsequent and the PC statement both condemned the Russian military action and called for its cessation. I am guessing/hoping this was the source of the dispute within the PC.
Most decent and genuine Communist Parties around the world and including the Revolutionary Government of Cuba, have not condemned the Russian action, but placed it firmly in the context of imperialism and NATOs ambition to first encircle Russia and ultimately dismember it.
The immediate reason for the intervention was the ongoing massacres of Russian speaking and ethnic Russians in the east of Ukraine. If the Ukrainian state and government consistently and resolutely refuse to do anything to stop this ongoing mass killing, what other options are you left with apart from force, unless you just leave hundreds of thousands, nay millions, to be "ethnically cleansed"?
