The first CUL was in 1969. The final one was in 1981, by which time various Trotskyites had copied the format. For the 'universities' to work, the party organising it has to have a certain critical mass of specialists in diverse areas able to give interesting talks or debate with others, and sufficient younger members keen to marinade themselves in the ideology and take part. Without that, the format is a very bad idea.
