I wonder if they were touched up in the original photograph or perhaps it's just lighting and camera technology.
Below are some of the wedding gifts given to Princess Helen of Orleans when she married the Duke of Aosta in 1895.
One of the more interesting things which the publication of the descriptions of the wedding gifts reveals is that the second large emerald necklace she was photographed wearing was definitely a wedding gift from the groom, the Duke of Aosta.
The necklace
matches the description in the press -- all the press reports I looked at were the same.
The tiara worn by the Duchess in the photo above was the gift of the King and Queen of Italy. The numerous diamonds on spikes were obviously a later addition.
Some other gifts.
Pearls from the Duke of Aosta. The Duchess is probably wearing them in the photo above also.
The emeralds in the necklace the Duke of Aosta gave Princess Helene are stunning. It is a shame there are no colour photos of her wearing the jewel.
It is interesting that the tiara worn today is not the same as the original, so perhaps Malluu was correct and it has been rebuilt.
