The "Russian sapphire" brooch and my disappointment
Posted by Beth on February 10, 2019, 5:03 am
Yesterday, while trying to recover from the rigours of a humid day, I found this photo of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother which Alamy dates as 1945.
As this is obviously the so called Russian sapphire brooch, I was very excited for a minute, until I realised that HM's clothes were not fashions circa 1945!!
A closer look at Alamy's information showed the date the photo was taken was said to be 8 January 1960.
But there was more confusion when I looked at a second copy of this photo on the site.
Here we are told that the photo was taken on 28 February 2012!!
So far I have not found anything about this visit in the press so I am not sure when the photo was taken, but HM's clothes say it definitely was not taken in the late 1940s -- so I think it is highly unlikely that it was taken before the death of Queen Mary.
