From time to time I have endeavoured to find information about the origin of QEII's so called Baring ruby necklace, which it is said by most to have been purchased by HM in 1964 from the Baring Collection.
While Barings have an art collection, I have never seen any reference to it holding a jewellery collection.
I wonder where the reference, Baring, came from? Has the Royal Collection every made reference to the ruby necklace as the Baring rubies?
For anyone who is unfamiliar with the term, below is an image of the necklace.
There are many branches of the Baring family. For example the ---
Northbrooks
Cromers
Ashburtons
Revelstokes
and 2 Barons Baring
So far I haven't found references to any of the ladies in these families wearing grand ruby jewels, but my searches have not been exhaustive!
What I have found so far.
On 8 February 1928 Sir Godfrey Baring sold a ruby necklace and tiara through Christie's. The stones were said to have originally belonged to Marie Antoinette.
In my opinion the following description indicates that the necklace was not the one now worn by QEII.
Has anyone ever seen images of Sir Godfrey Baring's wife wearing grand jewels?
