Some Baring rubies Posted by Beth on November 3, 2019, 8:35 am From time to time I have endeavoured to find information about the origin of QEII's so called Baring ruby necklace, which it is said by most to have been purchased by HM in 1964 from the Baring Collection. While Barings have an art collection, I have never seen any reference to it holding a jewellery collection. I wonder where the reference, Baring, came from? Has the Royal Collection every made reference to the ruby necklace as the Baring rubies? For anyone who is unfamiliar with the term, below is an image of the necklace. There are many branches of the Baring family. For example the --- Northbrooks Cromers Ashburtons Revelstokes and 2 Barons Baring So far I haven't found references to any of the ladies in these families wearing grand ruby jewels, but my searches have not been exhaustive! What I have found so far. On 8 February 1928 Sir Godfrey Baring sold a ruby necklace and tiara through Christie's. The stones were said to have originally belonged to Marie Antoinette. In my opinion the following description indicates that the necklace was not the one now worn by QEII. Has anyone ever seen images of Sir Godfrey Baring's wife wearing grand jewels?

I have also wondered about the so called Baring Necklace and did a post on it sometime ago. Is it possible that when people or articles reference QE they could have been really meaning QEQM but just did not distinguish one from the other. And I say this because it could be possible that the Baring necklace may have been acquired by the Queen's mother who was also Elizabeth and styled QE until the ascension of her daughter the present QE2. Remember it was also reported that the late QEQM acquired a tiara unknown to the public well into her 60's but same was never seen. The ruby clips from her collection always strikes me as they could be from a coordinating set of jewels. Regards, Dave. Formerly in the Baring collection, the necklace was acquired by The Queen in 1964. I was very interested to see that you included references to the Royal Collection site where it states that the necklace came from the Baring Collection. But we are still left with the mystery of who actually owned the rubies before QEII.
