I am currently (again) locked out of Photobucket, so I cannot post any of the cuttings I have and instead will try to make a few points.
From the information available, the necklace had to have been sold to the Maharaja of Indore before 1926.
When ever it was sold, I am fairly confident it was not in the Christie's auction of 1902. I haven't seen the catalogue, but none of the press reports of the jewels sold mention such a necklace and, as it is said to be magnificent, I cannot imagine it was overlooked by the press.
Nor have I seen press reports of Georgina, Countess of Dudley wearing a grand emerald necklace, or of her daughter-in-law, Rachel wearing such a necklace.
The only person reported by the press as wearing such a necklace was Gertie Millar, second wife of the second Earl. Those reports are from 1926 and 1927, so it seems unlikely that her emeralds were the ones in possession of the Maharaja before 1926.
When the Dudley Pearl and some other jewels were sold in 1902, there is no evidence that the Dudleys had hit hard times. The family was extremely wealthy with a high disposable income. By circa August 1902 the second Earl had been appointed Viceroy in Ireland and had sufficient income to entertain lavishly. His first wife, Rachel, Countess of Dudley wore some very interesting and obviously costly jewels.
After the sale of the jewels in 1902, Georgina, Countess of Dudley continued to wear jewels which were favourably reported by the press. I don't think that there was any shortage of jewels for the Dudley ladies.
The jewels sold in 1902 were said to have belonged to Georgina, wife of the first Earl who was a connoisseur of jewels.
I have never read a biography of Georgina, Countess of Dudley, but I suspect that the jewels were sold to fund her convalescent homes for soldiers injured in the Boer War. This is an area of her life which I would like to have time to do more research on.
This link to Life magazine has some photos of some of the other jewels which Harry Winston had in the exhibition. https://books.google.com.au/books?id=x1QEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA67&lpg=PA67&dq=Dudley+emerald+necklace&source=bl&ots=W16osrymkM&sig=ACfU3U2dxATSdSH075BbZ7icptxa_mwxgg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjbjLH248_lAhVEg-YKHasYBqcQ6AEwC3oECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=Dudley%20emerald%20necklace&f=false
