I wonder how much of the jewels shown worn by those in the 15th/16th centuries was fake.

Gemstones must have been much rarer in those days simply because there wasn't the access in Europe to many of the markets where lots of gemstones are found in abundance.

This could also suggest why so few old jewels have survived.
