Favourite Lost Jewels Posted by Sam (The Beau Monde) on May 18, 2020, 10:10 pm Hi all Hope we are all keeping safe and well. I thought it would be fun to find out what everyone's favourite lost jewels were, jewellery that has been lost or broken up or that we don't see much of anymore. Mine would be anything before the English Civil War. I read all the time about the jewels of Henry Viii and Elizabeth i. One piece that has survived is the crown of Blanche of Lancaster, which is now in Bavaria. Originally made for Ann of Bohemia, the first wife of Richard ii, the king who first wanted to be called 'Your Majesty' [img][/img] There was this brilliant series years ago called 'Seven Ages of Britain' with David Dimbleby and it focused on Art history and I'll always remember him saying 'If this was the crown of the Queen, imagine what the Kings must have looked like' How about everyone else, what's your favourite lost jewels?

When you see portraits of how 15th and 16th century royals were just dripping in jewels, it does make you wonder what happened to them. I suppose the most iconic Tudor jewel is the "B" necklace associated with Anne Boleyn. One further thought Posted by Janet on May 18, 2020, 11:04 pm, in reply to "This is so funny..." I wonder how much of the jewels shown worn by those in the 15th/16th centuries was fake. Gemstones must have been much rarer in those days simply because there wasn't the access in Europe to many of the markets where lots of gemstones are found in abundance. This could also suggest why so few old jewels have survived.

There is another brilliant documentary on the Cheapside Hoard' It's called London's lost jewels. I'd put up the link but I don't want to get into copyright trouble. You can find it on Youtube, it's presented by Shaun Leane. In the documentary, he talks about how diamonds and emeralds would have got to London in the early 1600s but there is also a bit about how they manufactured fake jewels buy dyeing stones and passing them off as rare gems.

Queen Charlotte's nuptial crown Posted by Beth on May 20, 2020, 5:45 pm, in reply to "Favourite Lost Jewels" One jewel which intrigues me, and has not been seen in many years, is Queen Charlotte's nuptial crown, which formed part of the Hanoverian claim on the British royal jewels. I wish that the Hanoverian royals would put it on display and provide some modern, high definition photos of the little crown. As worn by Queen Fredericka of Greece for her wedding.

Queen Charlotte's nuptial crown" Like Franck, who has tried to find information on these for some time, I would also like to either see or have more information on the two sapphire tiaras which Leslie Field says are in QEII's collection, but not worn. There are many possibilities. Could Field be mistaken? Could one of them possibly be the tiara worn by Princess Margaret and Queen Mary which had a large sapphire brooch in the centre? (the brooch having later been in Princess Margaret's collection)

Most people think it cam from Maria Feodorovna but I can't see her owning something that small. I know she left Russia with her 'everyday jewels' but they were things like hair pins and brooches. I've always had a theory that this came from Princess Nicholas. [img]keyboard diagnostics windows 10[/img] I know Philip Lazlo was an excellent artist but I wonder if he took artistic license with the shape of the tiara for symmetrical purposes.

Leslie Field may be mistaken. 2. QEII may have 2 sapphire tiaras in her collection which are unknown to us. 3. One possibility is that one of the mystery tiaras may be the one worn by Queen Mary (and later by Princess Margaret) which had the large sapphire brooch in the centre. It is an intriguing mystery! If any one is ever going to solve this for us, it will be Franck! He has been searching constantly for these tiaras!

However just like there were only tiny clues to the existence of the Greville Emerald until it shone in all its glory I am hopeful that one day the deep deep depths of the British vaults may very likely produce two sapphire tiaras.
