Queen Mary is supposed to have inherited the sapphires from her aunt. She certainly bought historic items from the old Grand Duchess's widowed daughter in law and her two daughters in the 20s

Were they left to her by Grand Duchess Augusta (possibly quite odd when Grand Duchess Augusta had children and grandchildren of her own) or were they possibly purchased by Queen Mary from one of Grand Duchess Augusta's descendants?
