I too was under the impression that Queen Mary inherited the Cambridge sapphires from her aunt, Augusta, Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg Strelitz. I had the idea that I read that in John Pope Hennessy's biography, but today I could not find that. Instead, I found the information in 1987 edition of Leslie Field's book.

I wonder if Leslie Field made a guess, or if she had positive information?? If not, then, depending on when the parure was first seen on Queen Mary, it may be possible that it, like other jewels referred to, was purchased by Queen Mary in the 1920s.
