History of Famous Jewels and Collections: Re: Princess Marina of Kent Deco Tiara

Apologies for such a late reply Andrew U. I have been very busy in the last few days and had hoped that Ursula would respond to your query.

I think that this is the "mystery" tiara mentioned in several media reports as being part of the wedding gift of the Duke of Kent to Princess Marina. As far as I can see there is no evidence that it was given to Princess Marina by Queen Mary or that HM lent it to her daughter-in-law.

Over the years there were various discussions about the "mystery" tiara on the Royal Jewels of the World Message Board. Unfortunately, not all the discussions can be located now, as there appears to be a major problem since funding was allowed to lapse last year, and what is left of the archive is no longer easily searched. A lot of posts appear to have been lost completely.

The links which I supplied at the beginning of that discussion in November 2016 no longer work. But they do attest to the ongoing discussions on the board.

Ursula and Laura eventually found photos of Princess Marina wearing a previously unrecognised tiara and Ursula published the item you gave a link for.

By early 2019 I had also found images in the press and, as is my practice, I looked to make sure no one else had published on the tiara. That is when I found Ursula's and Laura's item.

Rather than publish my items, I started a thread on this board to congratulate them.

Although I had done completely independent research, they had published first and so I gave them the credit, as I feel that is the only honourable thing to do.

What has intrigued me is that Ursula has not identified where she and Laura found the images.

As I had found the same images I know that they came from Tatler, The Sketch and Bystander.
