Duke of Kent wedding gift tiara. Congratulations to Ursula and Laura Posted by Beth on February 6, 2019, 9:29 am Congratulations to Ursula and Laura for solving the puzzle of the tiara the Duke of Kent gave to Princess Marina for their wedding. There have been numerous discussions about the tiara (which had an interchangeable centre) over a long period of time. Now Ursula has published the findings. A photo showing the couple arriving at the Empire Ball in 1935 I think that Princess Marina may have worn the tiara to the Hampden House Ball (a coronation ball) in 1937 -- but I am not 100% sure. The tiara definitely isn't the City of London fringe tiara or the diamond and pearl snake tiara. What do others think?

Up to now I have only been able to read about it in old newspaper articles. So thanks to Ursula and Laura and also to you Beth for posting more photos and for alerting us of this. About the tiara worn by the Duchess in the photo from the Hampden House Ball; if it is not the diamond and pearl bandeau I would definitely say that the tiara from her husband is a very good contender here. Also I was drawn to the lady in the background. She is wearing a rather impressive tiara. Any idea about who she is? This new information (to me at least) also raises a question for me. I have seen a photo (alas I do not have the possibility to upload it, nor do I have a link to it) from AP Images. I saw it some time ago, but when I try to search for it now it seems to be gone. I did make a note of it though and it was dated 04.05.1937 and according to the website it was taken at the reception given by the treasurer and masters of the Bench of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple of the Delegates of the Parliaments of the Empire. Congratulations to Ursula and Laura" I cannot find any direct information about who the lady is in the photo of Princess Marina entering Hampden House for the coronation ball in 1937. Here is the full photo The ball was given by the Duchess of Sutherland, who was described in the press as wearing a high tiara and a brocade gown. Perhaps the lady is the Duchess but, if so, she is not wearing her famous art deco tiara. Every body who was any body attended this ball. Not only was it a coronation ball but it was the first time a King or Queen had attended a ball in a private house since 1914 --according to the press. The King and Queen and Queen Mary attended. She could of course be the hostess greeting her guest at the front door. But it is a bit funny that even before I saw your full photo where it was said that Crown Princess Märtha of Norway attended I thought maybe the lady could be the Norwegian Crown Princess. I don't know what made me think that because it is not easy to distinguish any special facial features. Maybe it was the tiara, thinking that it might be the Queen Josephine's diamond tiara. I don't know. But, as I said, it is impossible to say for sure based on that photo. Still, it is interesting to see that the newspaper mentioned the Norwegian Crown Princely couple being present at the ball. Would it not have been wonderful to see photos of all the guests to this event? The fact that a photo exists of the Duchess of Kent shows that there were photographers present.
