I double checked in Pope-Hennessy's biography of Queen Mary. The stars (I think there were 3) were a gift from her grandmother, the Duchess of Cambridge on her Confirmation on 1 August 1885.
Pope-Hennessy recorded that Queen Mary wore the largest of them on her white dress when she attended her first Drawing Room in 1886. Another can be seen partially hidden by the Court feathers in her headdress in the photos below.
