Marie Alexandrovna's sapphire parure was designed to celebrate her marriage to a British prince and was made up of English, Scottish and Irish symbols. I can't help but feel it was a tragedy that Queen Mary never had the chance to buy it.
We know that the sapphires were gifted to Marie Alexandrovna's daughter Victoria Melita as she was pictured wearing them in pictures in the 1910s and presumably they were either left behind in Russia or sold very soon after they escaped in 1917.
Thye clearly did not form part of the jewels which Victoria Melita sold to her sister Marie of Romania.
Such a loss.
