Cartier Tiara Posted by MarcA on September 18, 2018, 4:22 pm Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me more about this tiara? http://orderofsplendor.blogspot.com/2014/01/tiara-thursday-cartier-onyx-tree.html There is some info in the orderofsartorialsplendor.com website but nothing on whomever bought it or commissioned it. I think it features with more detail or ownership in the Nadelhoffer book but I don't have a copy. If I remember it was bought or commissioned by one the great industrialists in the USA. I've always thought it was one of the most stylish and high design pieces in a tiara I've ever seen. Thank you in advance. Marc

Similary, Cartier Innovation through the 20th century also carries a photo but does not say who commissioned, or purchased, it.

It must have belonged to such a private family if they won't even be backgrounded within the archives. 1914 is also an interesting period as it could have been a Russian family or also US. However I think that during the first world war was when the tiara really started to become less of a go to for the wealthy or newer wealth of the USA. So it may in have really never left the vault in the USA or the same in Russia only to be sold. If it changed hand a few times I suspect it may have been acquired in same cases more because of it's design quality.

All that any of the Cartier books, the National Gallery of Australia one included, say is that it was made by Cartier Paris in 1914. That rather leaves the field wide open for who could have purchased it - perhaps a European, perhaps a north American, perhaps an Asian.
