Maria Anna wearing Marie Antoinette's pearl Posted by Beth on November 15, 2018, 6:28 pm, in reply to "Re: Video of Bourbon Parma auction" I am not sure what I find more intriguing just at present -- Marie Antoinette's pearl or the price paid for it. For those who missed watching the auction, the bidding at one stage increased by one million Swiss Franc lots and then by two million. Hearing the reaction of those attending the auction and watching the auctioneer kept me glued to my computer screen. I hope that the video will eventually be placed on You Tube or online at the Sotheby's site. The Grand Ladies site has a very good copy of the photo of Maria Anna wearing Marie Antoinette's pearls, the pearl pendant and other jewels. http://www.gogmsite.net/the-belle-epoque-1890-1914/subalbum-maria-anna-of/1913-archiduchesse-maria.html One of the reasons why I would like to see the video again is that the fleur de lys tiara looked incredible -- so much better than in any photograph I have seen.

Re: Video of Bourbon Parma auction Posted by Dave on November 16, 2018, 12:15 pm, in reply to "Re: Video of Bourbon Parma auction" Although I have a great love and joy for all things royal and jewels and history, this auction does create some degree of guilt and disgust to know that so much can be spent on such small inanimate objects and yet we cannot as a human kind solve the profound hunger and thieving problems we face in health and such other like issues. Just think about it, 36 million on a stone no bigger than a finger joint. I'm sure the insurance and security cost on this small stone will amount to no less than a good few hundred thousand every year. Was it all worth it? It’s not the sale, so much as the idea that spending money is almost an achievement.
