This Tiara is commonly known as the Franco Emerald Tiara on the internet, and is thought to be a Wedding Gift from General Franco to his granddaughter, María del Carmen Martínez-Bordiú y Franco, the 2nd Duchess of Franco, when she married the Duke of Anjou and Cádiz in 1972. The Tiara was also worn by her at the Wedding of the Count de Quintanilla with Princess Teresa de Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn in 1973.

This is the second tiara I've heard about being gifted by the late General Franco; the first being to QS of Spain, and his choices are beautiful. I take it the late General must of have great taste and some kind of commitment to royalty so I find it duplicitous that he was really a dictator and did not have the best in mind for Spain or the Spanish people. But her books often say things like “the President was a dictator who murdered hundreds of thousands of people, but he had perfect table manners and his wife gave fabulous parties”.

Maybe General Franco had dreams of creating a legacy similar to the French emperor Napoleon. I did review on another board that his daughter or wife also had their own considerable jewel collection. I cannot equate his actions as being a dictator if he indeed agreed to the return of a constitutional royal family and a democracy. I guess he is more in line with the traits of Oliver Cromwell who was viewed as a Lord Protector/ Great Steward in the UK's interregnum period. Regards, Dave. That legend of the emerald tiara beeing stolen has been repeated a few times. It does not make it more true. The Franco Cadix emerald tiara was sold at Christie's in the 1980s with the necklace, the brooch and the earrings.
