How old photos can fool me Posted by Beth on December 13, 2018, 5:58 am When I saw the image below I placed it in the "to be identified category". I thought that the necklace had clusters of smaller stones joined by diamond elements. How wrong I was!! By searching for other photos of HM from the same occasion (the premier of Romeo and Juliet) I saw that the "unknown" necklace was the Brazilian aquamarine.

This time it seems even more unusual to me as the Queen is not wearing family orders or sashes etc, and has worn it in her usual brooch position.

I have been looking to see if perhaps this is a badge rather that an actual Garter piece. The Coldstream Guards have the Garter Star as their regimental badge but all views of it seem to show the full star - not just the central element. I was also wondering if perhaps it was meant to be a more formal "miniature" Garter - in the same way that military medals are worn in miniature on formal evening dress. I think HM wears it more as a brooch due to its size. It would get lost if worn lower toward the hip like a regular breast star. Quite perplexing this one...

Bryce, the badge is definitely not a regimental badge: we know from footage of the performance that full orders were worn that night. Link to the Pathé video: (By the way, the close-ups of the Brazilian diadem are excellent, and I think I am growing fonder of the original version each time I see it.) I think HM was trying to adapt to the lessening of the level of formality of these occasions by wearing "diminutive" Garter insignia. The other known time she wore the badge, at another film performance in 1969, was with her family orders. In 1970, Orders were worn as well (no sash but apparently a full star): From 1971 onwards orders disappeared from Royal Film of Variety performances.

This Garter badge reminds me of badges worn on ribbons during the 16th century. For example the Earl of Essex: Another one of Earl of Leicester Apparently the eight point star was introduced by Charles I. Could this be an ancient piece or a modern interpretation of an ancient badge?

It's never been one of my favourites probably because of the tiara but in these pictures I absolutely love it.
