Coronation gifts. Posted by Beth on January 12, 2019, 4:42 am I wonder what is known about Coronation gifts? Any reign can be included --providing the gift contains precious stones or metals or could be classified as a jewelled object.

" This snuff box was a gift from Queen Mary to her son, George VI for his coronation in 1937. https://www.rct.uk/collection/4083/snuff-box According to the Royal Collection site https://www.rct.uk/collection/4083/snuff-box the snuff box was made in 1911 for the coronation of George V and Queen Mary, which explains why it resembles the gift Queen Mary gave to George V for Christmas 1913. Christmas gift. In the better quality photo on the Royal Collection site, it can be seen that Queen Mary is wearing Queen Victoria's Regal circlet and probably Cullinan III and IV as a brooch. The other interesting query that these miniatures of Queen Mary (both seem to be the same) raises is -- how often did Queen Mary wear the Regal circlet? Previously, I think we have only seen photographs showing it being worn at the first opening of parliament by George V in 1911.

Queen Mary to George VI" Queen Elizabeth ii received the original setting of the Brazilian necklace and matching earrings in 1953 to mark her coronation. Queen Mary received this Honiton Lace fan from the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers to mark her coronation. The fan has HMs Monogram in gold and the pin is also gold with diamond heads.

It is a stunning parure! I don't recollect ever seeing the gift to Queen Mary previously. Thank you for posting about that. The beauty of the fan makes me think we should expand this board to include other such items, be they in jewelled or non-jewelled items.

" At the Cartier Exhibition in Canberra last year, one of the exhibits was this Cartier clock, a gift from Queen Alexandra to George V for his coronation. According to the Exhibition notes, the clock was a stock item and purchased shortly before the coronation. Queen Alexandra spent a couple of days in London just prior to the coronation so perhaps she purchased it then before retreating to Sandringham with her sister and Princess Victoria. Queen Alexandra to George V" Hi Beth, I went to the exhibition which was more stunning than I had hoped. I was especially intrigued which the elaborate cigarette holders and cases studded with gems from a bygone era. I was surprised to see how short the Queens Greville Ruby and Diamond necklace was. Lady Mountbatten's Tutti Frutti tiara was stunning...I had the most delightful conversation with a lady about not liking carved gemstones! Her husband overheard and opined that at least there is something here that you don't want! The Jadeite necklace was the highlight for me however...mesmerising. Did anyone else go? Maybe next time there is an exhibition in Australia all of us jewellies should try and meet. We should try to do a few threads on the jewels displayed in Canberra. I surprised myself by my reactions when I saw certain items. Oh!! The jadeite necklace! Some of our fellow posters in north America and Europe have seen it in exhibitions there and, like us, were mesmerised.

It is often said that there were a few of these made to be given to different Grand Duchesses(I've read 6 or 18 were made). Has anyone ever seen another similar brooch??
