Rosse Emerald Tiara Posted by The Royal Watcher on February 8, 2019, 5:47 pm I wrote an Article on the Rosse Emerald Tiara, HERE, to mark the Anniversary of the Birth of Anne Parsons, Countess of Rosse, the mother of Antony Armstrong-Jones, Lord Snowdon and the mother-in-law of Princess Margaret! In my research over the course of two years, I discovered many pictures of the Countess wearing the pice, as well as a few pictures of the Tiara, and even its entry in Diana Scarisbrick’s Ancestral Jewels! I suspect the Tiara still belongs to the family, because I watched a documentary about Birr Castle (can't remember the name) in which the current Countess mentioned the Tiara! If any of you have any information or more pictures, I'd love to learn more!

I have never followed up on the jewels of the Rosse family, so I was interested to read your article and to learn that you think the parure is still with the family. I had assumed that the modern photos of the tiara might have meant the parure was auctioned at some time -- I assumed that was probably to pay for death duty taxes. Great to know that is not the case. Lord Snowdon's mother at the 1937 coronation (the only image I have of these jewels) One thing I would venture to say is that I don't think all these emerald jewels were a parure originally. Stylistically they do not match, but I am sure that together all the jewels make a splendid sight.

The Rosse jewels were sold at Christie’s separately in 1980s. The tiara was sold a few years after the death of the earl of Rosse who died in 1979. The necklace was sold a few years later. If you check the credits of the photographs of these jewels in Diana Scarisbrick book in which they are reproduced, both credits are Christie’s.

I am sure we have touched on several items reacquired by QM for the royal collection such as the Indian tiara' and possibly by HM QE2 from her sister's PM's estate. I have read that the PoW wanted to get his first wife jewels from his late Aunt the DoW and he has purportedly done the same for his present wife from her late great grandmother Alice Frederica Keppel past jewels. As you say, this may be possible for the queen of England and the prince of Wales, who have rather important financial means. And they don't do it very often. Sadly, the only fact that we are sure of, is that both tiara and necklace were sold. The rest is speculation and not facts.

It seems that the Rosse family did need to liquidate some of their assets even before the death of the Earl. In November 1960 some jewels were sold This was the same Christie's auction as when some of the Harewoods' most important jewels were sold In 1966 other items were sold. (I have not seen the catalogue so I am not sure if these were books or manuscripts ) Apart from the emeralds, the Rosse family (or the Countess) had other jewels, although the emeralds seem to have been The family jewels.

Not just that, but I've seen dozens of posts on tiaras using the information that I have gathered over the years! Sadly, this is not uncommon, as I have found many websites and youtube channels in particular, copying my articles and using the pictures and banners I have gathered and created over years! And unfortunately, there seems to be few ways to stop them!
