Spencer Diamond Necklace and Pendant Posted by The Royal Watcher on February 20, 2019, 5:51 am The Earl Spencer posted a lovely photo of a stunning heirloom diamond necklace and pendant worn by the Countess, along with the provenance of the piece! "Stunning diamonds worn by my favourite - @karenspencer1508 - which were given to ‘The Favourite’: Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough (the @rachelweiszofficial character), by Queen Anne. She left them to her favourite (that word again) grandchild, the Hon. John Spencer, whose son became 1st Earl Spencer." I seem to recall seeing a picture of the pendant (on a red background) along with some other family jewels, but for the life of me, I cannot seem to find those pictures again, and I'd really appreciate if any of you knew where to locate them!

On the left there are two collets between pendant suspension hooks but on the right there is only one. Many thanks for the post The Royal Watcher! It is marvelous to get the history from the owner. As Earl Spencer is so interested in the history of his family, I have no doubt that he has doubled checked the information, and that this is not just a "traditional family story". Despite using the google image reverse search, I cannot seem to find the website where I got them! The jewels include the tourmaline pendant worn by the Countess as well as a shamrock bangle given by Queen Alexandra and other Brooches, Bracelets, and a Ring!

To my eyes the necklace seems a bit longer now than previously. I might very well be wrong of course. And also there is something odd about the number of diamonds between the suspension hooks. Counting from the first pearl pendant in the photo where the necklace is placed on a red cushion there are two diamonds before the next pendant. Then two more diamonds before the second pearl (being the centre of the necklace). Then just one diamond till the next pendant. And again two diamonds before the last pendant pearl. But looking at the more recent photo of it when it is worn the first suspension hook seems to have disappeared. Then between the first hook that can be seen and the centre pendant there are two diamonds. Then one diamond before the next suspension hook and then two before the last hook. So something could have been done to the necklace at some point. Previous Message Interesting that it is lob sided. Re: Spencer Diamond Necklace and Pendant Posted by mauriz on February 21, 2019, 5:07 pm, in reply to "Spencer Diamond Necklace and Pendant" Apparently the Spencers had (have?) a second smaller pendant/brooch with a similar stone as not only Cynthia, Countess Spencer was wearing both pieces as pendants for the coronation in 1953 but also Charlotte, wife of the 5th Earl wore them as brooches for a portrait in the 1880's, together with elements later used for the greek key tiara attached to her bodice. The diamond collets of the necklace appear to have been assembled in their correct order on this occasion. And when she appeared at the Devonshire House Ball in 1897, she was wearing the large pendant and the honeysuckle elements attached to her hat.

The pendant which Earl Spencer says came from Queen Anne A bracelet of natural pearls with a diamond and enamel clasp with a diamond monogram, MB, in brilliant and rose diamonds. I cannot even access their website now!! So I thought I would continue with Maridje's information and post the images when I can. 1. Antique collet and tapered line bracelet presented by the Ladies of Ireland. This is the "plain" diamond bracelet in the Royal Watcher's series of photos. Mardije's information allowed me to search the newspapers and I discovered that the bracelet was presented to Charlotte, the 5th Countess on Friday 12 June 1874 by a group of Irish ladies. By this time the Spencers had returned to England. The idea of raising money to present a bracelet was initiated by an anonymous letter to the Freeman's Journal 14 February 1874, and in support of raising money to show the widespread appreciation of Irish women, the writer forwarded a donation of twenty pounds. The bracelet presented was selected from items tendered by leading jewellery firms in England and Ireland, with the one tendered by the Irish firm of Waterhouse and Co., of Dublin being the choice of a committee. Raine Spencer can be seen wearing the bracelet in the photos of her in a blue evening gown. I suspect that, in the photo of the current Countess wearing the diamond pendant earrings, the Countess is also wearing the bracelet. 2. Pendant emerald cross - with 5 emeralds, 4 pear shaped diamonds and 4 rose cut diamonds mounted in gold and silver. 3. The brooch with 3 sapphires (which can be seen in the Royal Watchers series) was set in 19th century style by Hennells in 1937. 4. Lozenge shaped diamond brooch. The diamonds are set in gold and silver. Unfortunately, I cannot yet find any information about when Queen Alexandra presented the shamrock bracelet to the 5th Countess.

Pink tourmaline ring Posted by mauriz on February 22, 2019, 7:09 pm, in reply to "Re: Spencer Diamond Necklace and Pendant Maridje's information and photos 2" I was thinking the tourmaline cluster of the ring could be the second smaller brooch worn by Countesses Charlotte and Cynthia, but if the ring was indeed purchased in 1864 there apparently was another coloured-gemstone-diamond-cluster-brooch in the Spencers's possession. The National Portrait Gallery has a photo of Charlotte, Countess Spencer with a similar brooch pinned to her coiffure or headgear which is dated 1861.

A website says the information about the Shamrock Bracelet was "antique diamond shamrock bangle bracelet was a gift from Queen Alexandra to Charlotte, 5th Countess Spencer", but I somehow remember the date being 1905, though I'm not totally sure about that!

And the bracelet Posted by Beth on February 23, 2019, 7:16 pm, in reply to "Earrings worn by Princess Diana and other members of her family" I spent a some hours today trying to ascertain if Queen Alexandra, either as Princess of Wales or as Queen, gave the 5th Countess Spencer a diamond bracelet. Unfortunately, despite searching under numerous terms, I have not found any information. That does not mean that Queen Alexandra did not give the Countess the bracelet we are currently interested in - just that I did not find any information on any of the key dates when I was searching under various terms. So, perhaps this will have to go under one of those "to be decided" categories.
