Princess Louise and Duchess of Saxe Coburg's pearls Posted by Beth on April 11, 2019, 8:21 pm I don't know if these have been identified previously. In an entry dated 10 March 1863 (the wedding day of Edward and Alexandra) Queen Victoria noted that Princess Louise wore the pearls which had belonged to Prince Albert's mother - which he had always intended giving to her. This is the photo J-F posted recently. It was taken on the wedding day.

Probably altered, in a longer version - 3 rows and a large clasp with an lovely sapphire. or it was the orginal clasp of the Duchess of Saxe-Coburg, Alberts Mother. The picture is still at the castle Rosenau, and I will tell you it's amazing. When I take that pictured I ask me, where are that pearls gone...which she presented in this picture very prominent. It jogged my memory! Yesterday I wondered if the pearls later worn by Marina, Duchess of Kent, could have belonged to Princess Louise and before her Albert's mother, but decided they were different pearls as Marina's pearls look slightly larger, had only 3 rows and the clasp looked different. But OmerH's photo shows Princess Louise wearing a bracelet with a large baroque pearl which I think is a match for the clasp on Princess Marina's pearls. What do others think? Could it be possible that the clasp from the bracelet went to Marina? I still think the pearls look larger and are not the same. In her journal on 18 March 1863, the day of Princess Louise's 15th birthday, Queen Victoria recorded that Louise was given the four rows of pearls which had a sapphire clasp. RCIN 404581 In my opinion, the shape of this clasp is different from the one which was on the pearls worn to the wedding of Edward and Alexandra on 10 March 1863. Perhaps Queen Victoria deemed a neutral coloured clasp more suitable for the wedding attire. For me the most interesting aspect of Queen Victoria's entry for 18 March 1863 was the information that Prince Albert had to buy his mother's pearls some years before. I wonder what was the story behind that?

Pearls with sapphire clasp" Thanks Dave. I know nothing about the jewels belonging to the mother of Prince Albert, but I strongly suspect that she did not have a notable collection. On top of that, it is likely that she would only have been allowed to take personally owned jewels with her when she was divorced. According to rumour, the pearls in the 4 strand pearl necklace/choker belonging to QEII were given to HM by the Japanese government.
