Inches away from the 'Vladimir' Posted by JohnAF on April 20, 2019, 5:02 am Yesterday I went to Buckingham Palace, Queen's Gallery, where I was just 3" away from the Vladimir with it's pearl drops. Well, there was a sheet of security glass between us, but it was still pretty amazing. Wonderful lustrous pearls and lots of diamonds - not huge, but a good quantity. There was even an elastic strap at the back to keep the ends attached. I've seen it before but I cannot find a photograph right now. There has to be a Russian connection. There were also lots of other objects and paintings - three Faberge eggs, picture frames, boxes etc. All in all a most interesting exhibition. It's only on for another week or so, if you can don't miss it.

Seeing jewels in reality always gives different perspective. Was the second brooch the one given to Queen Victoria for her 1897 Jubilee by the children of her daughter, Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse? What a delightful way to end an otherwise dull, rainy day. I much prefer Kat Max's photo of the sapphire Jubilee brooch, as it makes the sapphires look a velvety blue with an enormous depth of colour. Thanks for the great photos of the Vladimir tiara Kat Max -- some great shots of a favourite of many. Like OmerH, I am envious. It must have been a great exhibition to see. Kat Max, is that goldsmith work on the fan? Or just gold paint? And am I actually seeing small diamonds?

Most of the fans have wonderful sticks with leaves that do not match the quality of the sticks. There are some exceptions to this, but I'm often disspointed by faberge fans when I see them open. This is an earlier fan - mid 19th century by Faberge in gold and enamel Fan with Fabergé Guard, Mikhail Perkhin, 1899-1904 jewelled fan -MARKED FABERGÉ, WITH THE WORKMASTER'S MARK OF MICHAEL PERCHIN, ST PETERSBURG, 1899-1903 The royal collection in the UK has two faberge fans. Queen Mary was an avid collector of good quality fans. Many people think all jewelled fans are faberge, but this is not true, they were made by many jewellers and examples can be found as far back as the 18th century. The jewelled guard sticks make them very heavy to carry though and they were more for display than actual use as a cooling object.

The little research I've done says that QA had many of these jewelled and beautiful fans and I'm sure I either saw Princess Margaret and QE11 in portraits with fans as well but I cant find any pictures at this time. Great photographs kat max. I didn't take my camera with me & my phone was out of battery (bad planning!. It's funnt though, I googled various combinations of ' QEII brooches', 'QELL Russian brooches' etc & various came up, but not this one & I somehow missed it on the RCT site. Thanks.

Unfortuantley my attempted close ups didn't work so well. I didn't realise they were this bad till later when there was nothing I could do about it, but have a look anyway. this is all work by faberge - for some odd reason when loaded the orientation of some of these photos has changed, enjoy anyway.
