Unfortunately I know next to nothing about this subject. However the only Royal lady I can think of who has carried a fan in recent times is Queen Maxima at 2 Swedish weddings. Wonder if they are old jewelled fans but unfortunately no good pics are available for confirmation.

The only royal in modern times I can recall to be photographed with good quality old fans is Queen Elizabeth II between the 1950s-1970s and then she was using her grandmother Queen Mary's fans and they were only being used for formal portraits. Good quality fans show equal quality workmanship in both the sticks, guards and leaf and the best of them are planned before they are made with the whole harmonizing. It looks as if it might have some gold work. I seem to remember that Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was given at least one ostrich fan as a wedding gift. She was also regularly reported as carrying one at Court functions in the late 1920s. Often it was said to match the colour of her gown.

Kingdom as a gift for Charles and Diana for their wedding in 1981 in silver with the prince of wales crest in gold and made by goldsmith Thomas Dobbie. I noticed that Princess Diana was also presented with a second fan in 1985 when she attended the Fanmakers Banquet. Do you know if any photos or descriptions of that fan were ever made public? This photo was taken as Princess Diana arrived at the Mansion House for the Fanmakers Banquet in 1985.

I wasn't able to find any pictures of the 1985 presentation fan but there is at least one book from the worshipful company I don't have which might have it illustrated. Diana is carrying the Dobbie fan gifted to her at their wedding here.

It was the first time I had seen so many royal fans being sold publicly. Fan which Belonged to Princess Zinaida Yusupova A faberge fan c1880s made for Princess Yuspova This was the wedding fan of Titania Alexandrovna Ribopierre who married Nikolai Boriovich Yosupov in 1858. It was previously in 2 pieces with the lace and sticks separate. I'm sure there are a lot of fans with very interesting histories languishing in collections because nobody can work out what the the monogram means.

But perhaps in Tsarist Russia that was the norm. I wonder if, knowing that such a gift was going to be made, the Empress requested a mourning fan? I suspect that mourning paraphernalia was not a regular choice for gift giving (except for mourning rings etc used as a memento of the dead)

When Tsar was presented with formal bread and salt as welcome at places being visited it was often presented in valuable plates and boxes which were part of the gift they got to keep. Queen Elizabeth II has whole rooms of gifts of various sorts given to her on her tours and I know that she along with other Queens in the 19th century were gifted valuable fans at weddings etc.

Not all jewelled fans are connected to royalty but this should give you a taste for what can be found hiding mostly in private collections. 1838 fan of Empress Marie wife Alexander II of Russia In the 1830s it was popular to have brise fans (only sticks strung together) and have richly jewelled guard sticks. Here's a sample of this style. These fans are from the Sotheby's Thurn und Taxis Collection sale in 1992. Sold SF33,000 (1) An ostrich feather fan with jewelled mounts made by Peter Rath, Munich c1890. Old cut diamonds the front incoporating the initial M the reverse with a princely crown. The "M" stands for Furstin Margaete von Thurn un Taxis (1870-1955). Sold SF14,300 (2) A jewelled fan with two colour gold mounts and set with turquoise, emerald and diamond clusters. Probably German c1890 Princess Margaret and her daughter Princess Elizabeth Helen, later Markafin von Meissen 1915. The fan she is holding is photographed above. A lace fan with jewelled gold mounts, Mellero dits Meller, Paris c1896 Applied with the monogram DM below a french royal crown and fleurs de lys. The back decorated with the french royal emblem. The initials on the fan are for Arch Duchess Maria Doretha of Austria, Royal princess of Hungary and Bohemia. (1867-1932). She married in Vienna in 1896 philippe Duke of Orleans (1869-1926). The fan was commissioned by the royalists of Orne commemorates the marriage and the lace leaf incorporates both the arms of Bourbon and Hapsburg. This fan is showing the reverse side. How marvelous to be able to match the fan in the photo of the Princess of Thurn and Taxis to the one auctioned. But it is the Art Nouveau fan which has me intrigued. Has anyone any idea how the central gold and diamond medallion has been done? It does not appear to be a separate structure in front of the sticks; yet, if not, how does the fan fold?
