Queen Alexandra's sapphire necklace
Posted by Beth on May 14, 2019, 7:27 am
We all know that Queen Alexandra was given a sapphire and diamond necklace as a silver wedding anniversary gift by the Czar and Czarina of Russian.
I have previously identified that Queen Alexandra wore the sapphire elements in a tiara.
And we know that the necklace eventually came into the possession of Princess Maud of Fife, Countess of Southesk when it was auctioned with other items from her estate. (See Vincent Meylan, Christie's pp 68-69 where there is a superb colour photo of the necklace. Ursula also has a colour image of the necklace https://royal-magazin.de/england/queen-alexandra/sapphires-collar.htm
To date no photo of Queen Alexandra wearing the jewel as a necklace has been found, and for some unknown reason I had always assumed that this jewel was a dog collar, but the photo below shows the necklace was designed to sit under the Queen's diamond or pearl dog collars.
Maud Carnegie in 1939.

Thank you Ursula. I hadn't seen that item by you, otherwise I would have provided a link.
I notice that in your article you say the photo was from the 1937 ball. I double checked and the item was definitely published in the press in 1939. It was published in Tatler 12 July 1939.

You are right Beth, it was 1939 at the Russian Ball at the Ritz not 1937, thank you for that note.
