A Greek royal jewel (Princess Alice of Battenberg) Posted by Thomas on June 8, 2019, 9:42 am While browsing through Greek photographic archives, I discovered a little gem: a very patriotic copy of the photo showing Princess Andrew of Greece, née Alice of Battenberg and mother of the Duke of Edinburgh, wearing her wedding necklace as a tiara: The only other (known) sighting of this jewel was at her wedding, when she wore it as a necklace: Ella Kay of The Court Jeweller suggests that it was a wedding gift, which does seem likely. Does anyone know more about it? Perhaps it was actually the tiara broken up to make The Queen's Wedding bracelet? http://www.thecourtjeweller.com/2015/10/jewel-history-now-married-three-times.html As a matter of fact another similar postcard shows Alice (with two of her daughters) wearing an intriguing head-jewel, which I don't think we have discussed before:

I recall doing something on the jewels or tiaras of this particular princess sometime ago and probed as to if HM QE2 had received any of the jewels we have not seen such as the ones Thomas has now provided in the pictures. The necklace/tiara is a bit of a puzzle. Obviously it had some significance as Princess Alice wore it for her wedding day. Whenever I have seen it, I have had the feeling that it was originally designed as a necklace. I have also wondered if, perhaps at some stage, the jewel was broken up and the diamonds used for something like the meander tiara now worn by the Princess Royal? I don't think that tiara was seen on Princess Alice in photos of her as a young married woman. I have always assumed that it was a later addition to her collection and, as neither she or Prince Andrew had any significant money, the diamonds would have probably come from another jewel. The last photo, showing a tiara which is new to us, is a tremendous find. I have the feeling that there are 3 pendant black pearls in the centre, but there may be other stones. What do others think?
