Peeresses Tiaras at Coronation Posted by Dave on July 17, 2019, 11:37 am My next query is if we can try to identify some of the tiaras worn by the peeresses of the day. In particular their is a lady among the lot who is wearing a massive tiara with a rounded dark coloured stone at its centre. What does seem clear is that these jewels were first photographed on Beatrice Paget, Countess of Pembroke. One of the things which struck me is that a totally different set of jewels was worn by the previous Countess of Pembroke for the 1902 coronations. The earliest photo I have of Beatrice Paget wearing this tiara and the necklace is from 1935 Earlier photos show her with a bandeau -- two different ones. Opening of Parliament 1921 Opening of Parliament 1927 The only reference I have to Beatrice Paget, Countess of Pembroke wearing coloured jewels is from when her new mother-in-law presented her at a Court just after her wedding. At the time she wore sapphires, but I doubt if she had the grand tiara then (as the style looks later to me), but I could be mistaken as I am not up on jewellery styles. Does anyone know a possible date range or era for the large tiara? Presentation at Court in May 1904.

Countess of Pembroke" Beatrice Paget was the daughter of Lord Alexander Paget, a younger son of the 2nd Marquess of Anglesey. Her brother became the 6th Marquess of Anglesey in March 1905 following the early death of the 5th Marquess. The 5th Marquess (who died childless) squandered the family fortune, was declared bankrupt and several major auctions of his non-entailed possessions were held in 1904. I couldn't see any wedding gift from the 5th Marquess to his cousin, Beatrice. Here are some cuttings showing some family gifts to the bride. From the groom to the bride Earl and Countess of Pembroke to the bride Bride's mother and siblings (By this time the bride's father had died)

I'd guess the stones are emeralds. This photo shows how large the central stone is while the Countess also wears another cabochon stone on her left side. Countess of Pembroke" You are welcome OmerH but quite by accident, I just was watching over HM's coronation and you know how you can watch a film but every time you go over it you seem to have seen something you did not see the first time or previous times, well that's how it happened. Thanks for your picture which even does more justice to that humongous tiara and its central stone. I would just love to see them in colour and just to know something about its provenance, like who made it, maybe it was a French jewel house or maybe an English one? The tiara is just stunning and so huge, and all being in plain sight. Its design is also very simple but sophisticated and opulent. Is it or could it be a Russian headdress a kokoshnik? The Pembroke's are still quite wealthy though the upkeep of their estate(s) must be very high. Interestingly it is becoming common for the aristocratic families who open their homes to now display some of the family jewels i.e. the Devonshires, Spencers and Richmond's as a bit more of a pull. This may see a few pieces popping out of the wood work. And I'm not sure but was the loaning borrowing of jewels a custom in the 1930's as I'm thinking that maybe the Countess may have borrowed the massive hunker of a tiara and that is why no reports are shed on it as same may have been owned by a jewel house of the time? I did read that many jewel houses have jewels and head pieces stored in vaults. It was reported in one of the social magazines that on the marriage of the PoW, he had purchased a tiara for his 2nd wife from a jewel house that deals in antiques and sells stuff like Faberge, it was said the tiara was in the vault for over a hundred years or something like that. Looking at the structure, I'm convinced that the Countess is wearing bracelets as bodice ornaments with her Tiaras, especially at the Coronation! Looking at the size of the stones, I have a feeling they may be Indian, and the Tiara itself looks quite Edwardian. Though I have no proof, I think this piece was sold sometime between WWII and the 1960s! Regarding the Sapphire Tiara worn by the Countess at her Presentation, I believe it is the Tiara worn by the current Countess and her mother-in-law at their Weddings!

I also noticed the jewels at her waist and bodice very heavy looking, but I would be so disappointed if that great tiara has been gotten the rid of. But if it has been sold it just confirms what I've been saying on many a post about those types of well to do aristocrats who are not evidently short of money, but seem to sell stuff maybe for tax purposes. The Countess appears to have worn the central strand as a shoulder ornament in the photo of her at the Opening of Parliament in 1936 I wondered if these 3 strands formed a jewelled belt? In October 1922 the Earl and Countess held a ball for the coming out of their daughter, Lady Patricia, and Lady Patricia was said to have worn " a diamond and emerald girdle" Could it have been her mother's "corsage" ornament? Oh for a photo!!

I think that this is the tiara she was photographed wearing at the 1902 Coronation. Initially, I thought there were two different tiaras but, when I took into account the angle of the coronation photo, I came to the conclusion that it is the same tiara. What do others think? I know I could be very wrong. For the Dowager Countess to be able to donate this tiara, it had to be a personally owned item, not an entailed family jewel.

The necklace in the advertisement is not, in my opinion, the one we have seen photographed on the Countess. Closer view of item in the ad. The Countess wearing her necklace It is possible that the Countess was selling jewellery at this time (May 1960) as her husband had died on 13 January 1960; yet the estate hadn't been submitted for probate then. Its funny if the great tiara was sold or auctioned and never reported on. How does one hide or miss such a massive piece? I gather if it was only seen on the Countess Beatrice Paget, it may have been a wedding gift to her and not a Pembroke family heirloom. But then I could be still wrong as with the British royal house some pieces only gets a dusting every sixty or so years as was the case with the wedding headdress of Princess Eugenie. Fate of one tiara" You'd have thought that if Beatrix Countess of Pembroke had access to the larger tiara then she would have either worn it or had it altered to her taste etc to wear to the coronation. After all that is the biggest gun event of all time. This tiara has risen without a trace and disappeared without one! I wonder if it was a piece bought from one of the Russian families or soviet sales? It certainly has a kokoshnik feel to it. The timing also fits.
