As Beth notes it raises a lot of questions. I agree that the earrings look a great match and unless we can find a good close up of Diana we will never be sure unless we can get official confirmation. As they were simply referred to as a "gift" we will never likely know.
As the suite worn by Kate seems to match is that if the suite was given to Diana why was it not worn?
Maybe William and or Charles had the rest of the set made up to match the earrings but this is like the tail wagging the dog as the saying goes and seem improbable.
the set worn by Kate looks modern and I do not think that the Queen delved into one of her spare boxed and pulled it out!
I was interested to note the comment that the Saudi's gave Diana 2 parures. I think the Emerald necklace is one and the second is most likely the Ruby Tassel necklace. From the Saudi point of view this would with the wedding gift cover of the "big 3 coloured stones".
It would also explain why Camilla was given 3 parures by the Saudis in 3 different stones which I have also thought was a little odd.
More thought is needed on this and investigation. A most impressive set however!

What a conundrum Franck! One minute I think you are correct; the next I am querying it all.
If the emerald suite worn by the Duchess of Cambridge was a gift to Princess Diana at the time of her marriage or just after, why would the palace officials not have stated that? But it is possible that not all the wedding gifts to Princess Diana were publicised -- for example there was no mention at the time, or after, of what the Sultan of Brunei, King of Thailand etc may have given her -- so it is possible that she was given the emerald suite. It is equally possible that the suite was a gift to the Duchess of Cambridge. No information was released about gifts to the Cambridges.
I wish there were higher definition photos of Princess Diana wearing the earrings so that we could be sure they were part of the suite worn by the Duchess of Cambridge. Even though the photos are not so clear, it certainly looks possible. Below is a comparison which may help. The insert is of the earrings worn by the Duchess of Cambridge.
