Princess Anne’s Modern Diamond Necklace Posted by The Royal Watcher on August 16, 2019, 8:03 am I've written an article about Princess Anne’s Modern Diamond Necklace, HERE, to mark her birthday and was wondering what is known about its provenance! The necklace has been worn since the early 1970s, and given its design, I think it may be a Middle Eastern Gift (she notably wore it in Dubai), though it may have a Norwegian connection, as she wore it to two events with the Norwegian Royal Family (that connection may come from the necklace being a gift from a Norwegian Shipping Company, which gave grand gifts back in the day). I'm curious to learn what all of you know about this piece.

I found this image (enlarged) in the Australian Women's Weekly 20 Nov 1971 some years ago. There is also this photo (and a companion one) taken inside -- as opposed to the photos taken outdoors when Princess Anne was photographed in a fur trimmed evening coat. Detail I suspect that this may have been a 21st birthday present from her parents --hence why it is not seen earlier. While a middle eastern ruler cannot be ruled out, to my way of thinking that seems improbable at that time. Princess Anne launched her first naval ship, the Amazon, in April 1971 for the navy and the shipbuilders, Vosper Thornycroft, but I didn't see a mention of any gift in the press. Unless the Norwegian ship mentioned by The Royal Watcher was built and launched in the UK, I doubt if a Norwegian shipping company would give a British princess such a major gift. Do we have a year for the launch for the Norwegian ship?

"In 1972 her parents gives her an important necklace of unusual desiMn. At the front twenty-one triangular clusters with large collet drops are suspended between two looped motifs; at the back is a chain of diamond collets". Maridje

Thanks for drawing our attention to this Maridje. If Field was referring to the necklace The Royal Watcher wrote his article on then she is mistaken. Does the necklace we are discussing in this thread match the description given by Leslie Field?

Is it possible it can be worn as a small tiara? and if so maybe it came to her via a legacy from Prince Phillip's mother as Princess Ann uses the tiara her daughter was married in which came also from Prince Phillip's mother. That is the clearest photo I have ever seen of this necklace. I wonder if the number of drops was a co-incidence or if the Queen and Duke (or whoever gave Princess Anne this necklace) commissioned it for HRH's 21st birthday?
