Queen Maud's large diamond earrings in a shorter version Posted by mauriz on August 27, 2019, 8:01 pm Queen Sonja was often seen and photographed wearing the large diamond earrings from the early years of her marriage on. I never realised that the earrings can be shortened until I saw a set of images from the pre-wedding gala for Princess Alexia of Greece and Carlos Morales Quintana at Bridgewater House in 1999. While searching for a large and sharp image of the earrings I noticed that apparently one of the diamonds in the second tier went missing during the state visit to Portugal in 2008. Let's hope it was retrieved!

This pair of earrings are an outstanding and spectacular set of which has been reported to have passed from the British royals to their Norwegian relatives. I believe it was also discovered by one of our posters who compared the ones worn by QV of the UK and matched them. I just cant help but to watch them consistently. Regards, Dave. Posted by Knightship on August 28, 2019, 7:21 pm, in reply to "Queen Maud's large diamond earrings in a shorter version" I'm not sure since the photos are so blurry, but it looks like Queen Alexandra wore some huge earrings to the Devonshire Costume ball in 1897. Could it be the same...? Alexandra wore them as pendants, but did she also wear them as earrings? I can see what Knightship means, but I suspect that what I can see is the lace in Queen Alexandra's collar, but?? I know that there is a prevailing belief that Queen Alexandra wore only short earrings, but the ones she donated for auction to the Children's Fund during WWI were longer items, which suggests that she may have worn pendant earrings in private. Secondly, for the Devonshire House Ball, Queen Mary was (unexpectedly) wearing pendant earrings. Perhaps both ladies decided that creating their character's image over rode their own preferences.

That's an intriguing thought, and the reflections to both sides of her face seem to support it, but like Beth I think the largest part of it is probably the lace of her collar. But I've found a photogravure which depicts Alexandra wearing small pearl(?) drop earrings, and I think this might be accurate and could explain the two brightest spots just below her earlobes in the actual photo.

Without the lower segment the earrings have a very different look, and I know I would have assumed they were another set. I wonder how often the Queen has worn these jewels in this fashion?
