Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Cultured pearls?
Posted by Beth on September 29, 2019, 7:58 am
I found this advertisement a long time ago, meant to try to find similar ads, but of course got side tracked and forgot.
What interests me in the ad is the reference to QEQM, then Duchess of York. Could it be possible that some of the long strings of pearls she wore during the 1930s were cultured pearls? I suspect we have no way of proving that, but I doubt if, during that era, a firm seeking to enhance its reputation would fabricate a claim. The ad appeared in the Tatler, November 1936.
What do others think?
Re: Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Cultured pearls?
Judging from what I have seen and noticed of the late QM, I can hardly imagine her doing or least wearing anything that was not of the highest pedigree and standards. Her jewel collection was really immense and yet we have only seen a small portion of same and what we have seen are jewels that are really at the Tsars level.
Regards,
Dave.

Personally I wouldn't totally rule out that the cultured pearl necklaces worn by the late Queen Mother. One thing we have to remember is that at the time she was a young member of the Royal family but we are judging her tastes by her image as the Grand Doyenne of the Royal Family. Even when she became Queen in 1936 she was barely 36 years old!! Just to put it into perspective she was younger than our current two Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex who are 37 & 38 years old respectively and cultured pearls may have been viewed as something new and fashionable to try.
Maybe 30/40 years from now people will find it hard to believe that Queen Catherine once wore those Kiki McDonough pieces because they will be accustomed to seeing her in all the good things the Royal collection has to offer.
