British State Opening of Parliament | Tiaras
Posted by The Royal Watcher on October 14, 2019, 10:36 pm
There were quite a few Peeresses in Tiaras, and Princess Antonia, Duchess of Wellington (wearing the Wellington Tiara) and Lady Susan Hussey (wearing the Waldegrave Tiara) are among the few I've been able to identify through their jewels! The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Earl and Countess of Ulster, and the Marchioness of Cholmondeley were also present, though they did not participate, so were not in 'full dress'.
Anyone knows why the Duchess of Gloucester is wearing hat + daily clothes and not tiara and long dress?

After a few years gap, there was quite a lot of glitter at today's State Opening of Parliament, HERE , though for the first time since 1952 , the Queen choose to wear the George IV State Diadem for the entire ceremony, rather than just the arrival and departure.
The Queen was also wearing Queen Mary's Cluster Earrings and the Coronation Necklace .
The Duchess of Cornwall wore the Greville Tiara and The Duchess of Cornwall wore the Greville Tiara and her 4-strand Pearl Choker with Queen Alexandra’s Antique Diamond Clasp , with her everyday earrings.

The Duke is no longer a member of the House of Lords (since the 1997 reforms), and no longer attends the state opening. Thus his wife cannot attend as a peeress. Before 1997 royal Dukes could meet in the House of Lords (even if they did not do so for political meetings), and their wives could attend the opening as peeresses, which is why you can find a lot of pictures of the Kent and Gloucester Duchesses from previous years.
The Duke and Duchess were both present (with the Earl and Countess of Ulster) on the gallery as guests because their grandson Lord Culloden was a page of honour to the Queen. The dress-code for guests on the gallery is not the same as for peers/peeresses.

But is the Duke of Wellington sill a member of the House of lords? Or why did his wife and probably also he attend as peers?

I noticed that the Duchess of Cornwall was wearing an oblong brooch to secure her sash. She wore it previously to the Opening of Parliament in 2015.

Does any one have any information about it? Or a better photo? I keep trying to see if the brooch has blue enamel. Perhaps what I think is blue enamel are spaces through which the colour of the sash can be seen. What do others think?
Can anyone identify the bracelets HM is wearing? I guess the traditions of state are changing and the Queen should not have to be burden with a more than 2 pound crown on her head at her age. I kinda got the feeling HM looked frail and was under the weather. She also appeared to be at some degree of unease and frustration. I at times wonder why they the Queen and her female entourage could not at least wear more defining colors to state occasions, it would make the jewels more noticeable and stir things up a bit.
Regards,
Dave.

Dave. in answer to your question about HM's bracelet(s), she is wearing her Three Strand "Knotted" Diamond Bracelet on her right wrist and her silver Patek Philippe Ellipse watch on her left wrist.
As to your question about the colours of the dresses of the royal entourage, HM traditionally wears either white or gold for State Occasions such as the State Opening of Parliament, State Banquets and the State Diplomatic Reception.
Her Ladies-in-Waiting follow suit.
This along with the Windsor Jacket worn by men are the only real remaining relics of "court Dress" worn by the BRF.
For the State Opening of Parliament all Royal Ladies wear white. For other functions, such as banquets, the Duchess or Cornwall will also wear white but other Royal Ladies will wear coloured gowns.
HM often wears quite colourful gowns at other non-state functions
